About This Article
This article was produced by Pet Sitting NZ to highlight the inspiring journey of Stephen, a dog who has overcome significant challenges with the support and love of his owner, Katrina.
While Stephen was originally included in another feature as a client of one of our collaborating pet professionals (Lorna!), we quickly realised that his story deserved its own dedicated blog post.
This feature celebrates the unwavering commitment of pet owners in New Zealand like Katrina, who go above and beyond for their companion pets, showing the depth of love and care that can be found within our community.
Through Stephen’s story, we hope to inspire pet parents to provide the best possible care for their pets regardless of the challenges they may face and pet sitters should consider the abilities, needs, and specific care requirements of the pets they look after, as well as their own skills, knowledge, and capacity to provide appropriate care for pets with disabilities.

Stephen’s Journey: From Rescue to a Life of Love and Care
Meet Stephen, a remarkable dog with an incredible story of resilience, love, and adaptation. His journey began in Shanghai, where he was found on a highway with a severe spinal injury. Despite enduring multiple surgeries and a tough recovery, Stephen's spirit never wavered. Thanks to the kindness of those who crossed his path, he has found a loving home with Katrina, who has dedicated herself to ensuring he lives a comfortable and fulfilling life.
A Difficult Beginning
Stephen's early days were full of uncertainty. When he was rescued, he was malnourished and struggling to survive.
His injury left him unable to walk on his own, and it became clear that he would need long-term care.
Originally, he was set to be adopted in the US, but due to Covid-19 border closures, he remained with Katrina for over two years.
During that time, he became more than just a foster dog—he became family.
Adapting to a New Life
Katrina ensured Stephen had everything he needed to thrive. His mobility challenges meant she had to find creative ways to help him get around.
A thoughtful boss gifted him a wheelchair, allowing him to move more freely, and Katrina also uses a doggy stroller and camping trolley for his adventures.
At home, she’s made thoughtful modifications—like covering the driveway with vinyl to protect his legs from getting scratched—and is now planning to build a wooden path so he can safely access the lawn on his own from the front door .
Stephen’s care routine is carefully planned. Managing his incontinence involves using doggy diapers, waterproof towels, and a baby mattress with washable sheets. His bedding is changed daily to keep him comfortable, and he even has a special blanket—the very one he was wrapped in when he was rescued.
A Communicative and Loving Companion
Despite his challenges, Stephen is a happy and expressive dog. He has developed ways to communicate his needs, signaling when he wants something.
Whether it’s for a cuddle, a trip outside, or time in his wheelchair, he finds ways to make his wishes known.
His bond with Katrina is undeniable, built on trust, patience, and an unbreakable connection.
Health and Wellbeing
Caring for a disabled pet requires dedication, and Katrina has gone above and beyond to ensure Stephen’s health remains a priority. While he is prone to urinary tract infections, he doesn’t require constant medication. Instead, Katrina supports his health with supplements to maintain his joint function and overall wellbeing.
Life in Motion
Stephen loves his outdoor excursions, especially on weekends when he gets to enjoy time in his wheelchair.
He may not run like other dogs, but that doesn’t stop him from exploring and experiencing the world in his own way.
Whether it’s in his stroller, on a camping trolley, or simply lounging in his comfortable home, Stephen is living proof that a disability doesn’t define a pet’s quality of life.

A Lesson in Love and Dedication
Stephen’s journey from an injured stray in Shanghai to a beloved companion in New Zealand is a testament to the power of compassion. Katrina’s unwavering commitment to his care has not only transformed his life but has also shaped her own career path in animal care.
Their story is a beautiful reminder that every pet, no matter their challenges, deserves a chance at a happy and fulfilling life.
