Most pet sits go exactly to plan. Walks, feeds, cuddles, daily updates the kind of routine care that keeps pets happy and owners at ease while they're away. One of our PSNZ sitters recently found herself exactly there. The pet in her care began to decline while the owners were away and unable to get back in time. Rather than facing it alone or guessing at what the owners would want, she stayed in close contact with both the vet and the pet's family throughout, keeping them updated on how things were tracking day to day.
When it became clear the kindest option was to let the pet go, the decision was made together, sitter, owners, and vet. The vet came to the house, the owners were able to join by video call, and a close family member was there in person for the pet's final moments.
It's not the side of pet sitting most people think about. But it's real, and it's exactly the kind of moment that shows what professional, compassionate pet care looks like under pressure and why having the right documents in place matters for anyone working in pet sitting in NZ.
Why this changed how we talk about service agreements
This situation made us realise just how important it is to talk through how a moment like this would be handled, using a pet sitting service agreement.
Our PSNZ Service Agreement includes a section for the pet's vet details and a pre-authorised spend allowance for emergencies, along with minor, moderate and major emergency plans, so the owner's preferences for each level of situation are recorded and agreed on ahead of time.
Why it's worth the conversation
Taking the time to talk through this together, rather than leaving it until it's needed, helps reduce immediate stress and miscommunication. It means both sitter and owner already know how a situation should be handled for that specific pet, whether it's a minor or major emergency. In a dire situation, having the owner's support and preferences already agreed on makes a real difference for the sitter having to act in the moment.
It gives owners peace of mind that their preferences will be followed, and that they'll still feel in control of the decisions even from a distance. It gives sitters clarity on exactly how to act, based on what the owner has already told them. And because funds and vet authorisation are agreed upfront, it means a pet can be seen faster if care is needed without losing time trying to reach the owner first.
